Biomed Grid School 2009

About the school

The Biomed Grid School 2009 will take place in at Villa Monastero, Varenna, Lake Como, Italy from the 10th to 15th May 2009.

The aim of the school is to provide bioinformatics and biomedical developers the opportunity:

  • to learn to use new services and functionalities made available by new middleware releases
  • to implement applications in the EGEE Grid environments
  • to build high level interfaces for Grid and Web Services for data provision and management
  • to improve skills in Web Services, Workflow technology and Grid services for Bioinformatics e Biomedical applications
  • to learn how to generate complex workflows of Bioinformatics and System Biology analysis

A day at the school

Participants should arrive in Varenna on Sunday the 10 May. Activities at the school are scheduled from 9:00 to 18:30, from Monday to Friday (the school will end at lunchtime of Friday to allow people to travel home). Each day is made up of two main thematic sessions, with experts in the fields of advanced grid technology and distributed systems research for biomed applications invited to give talks and tutorials. There will be at least one hands on practical session per day. Leisure activities include a boat trip on beautiful lake Como.

The sessions at the Biomed Grid School will cover the following topics:

  •     Grid middleware
  •     Hands on job submission: grid-enabled cancer treatment planning
  •     Data management
  •     Hands on data management: grid-enabled epidemiology
  •     Hands on high level environments: in silico drug discovery
  •     Grid Portals
  •     Hands on grid portals: grid-enabled bioinformatics
  •     Workflow
  •     Hands on workflow: grid-enabled medical imaging

Total participant workload: 30 hours, including a end of course assessment test.

Target audience

The Biomed Grid School is aimed at biomedical research students, post-docs, and senior researchers with an interest in using or developing applications for distributed computing environments.

Application requirements

We invite applications from biomed researchers who have recently started or are about to start working on Grid projects in the bioinformatics and biomedical fields. Students may come from any country. Basic programming skills are required.
We expect to accept 20 students at the Biomed grid school.
